Think not!
After producing organic wheat for milling, primarily to make organic bread; organic barley, mostly for malting; and organic maize, with the vast majority for home grown feed for our cows: we are busy drilling crops for next year.
The organic dairy herd need constant care and twice a day milking, this is a 365 day a year responsibility so definitely no rest at the dairy: not even for Christmas!
The herd have won some awards too, relating to low cell counts, which refers to the bacteria levels in their milk. High levels means the milk is bad. This is especially brilliant as we are organic and we can't use any treatments to achieve these results. The awards are testament to Graham, Tracy and Matt's husbandry skills coupled with the fact that we now bed the cows on sand rather than straw. Sand comes in inert and clean, whereas straw/paper based bedding carries bacteria.Lets hope that we can continue these great results in 2012!
